NEW DELHI: Days after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Trinamool Congress leader Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide and actor Arpita Mukherjee, the financial probe agency has summoned another party MLA Manik Bhattacharya in connection with the teachers’ recruitment scam.

A senior ED official related to the probe told The New Indian, “Bhattacharya has been asked to join the probe on Wednesday in connection with either the teachers’ recruitment case.”

The development comes a day after the Calcutta high court sent Chatterjee and Mukherjee to 10 days of ED custody till August 3.

The ED arrested Chatterjee and Mukherjee on July 23. The ED also recovered several incriminating documents of immovable properties and shell companies. The ED also recovered ₹21.9 crores from Mukherjee’s flat in the Tollygunge area of Kolkata besides 27 mobile phones and jewellery worth ₹76 lakh.

The searches and arrests come months after the Calcutta high court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to carry out a probe into the recruitment scam of Group ‘C’ and ‘D’ staff, assistant teachers of classes IX-XII and primary teachers. The ED registered a case of money laundering on June 24 this year to probe financial irregularities in the “illegal appointment” of teaching staff and non-teaching staff in primary school.
