World’s longest river cruise all set for maiden voyage from Varanasi

The luxury cruise will cover a distance of more than 3,200 km and pass through five states in India and Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the world’s longest river cruise, Ganga Vilas, on January 13 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh through video conferencing. The Dibrugarh-bound luxury cruise will pass through Bangladesh for 15 days.

The cruise is all set to set on a voyage and will travel on the world’s longest waterway from Varanasi to Dibrugarh in Assam. It will go on an adventurous journey for 51 days.

The Ganga Vilas luxury cruise reached Ramnagar port in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district on Tuesday. Following this, it will go to Dibrugarh through the Brahmaputra river in Assam.

Ahead of the inauguration, PM Modi said that Ganga Vilas provides a unique opportunity to connect with “our cultural roots and discover beautiful aspects of India’s diversity.

The luxury cruise will cover a distance of more than 3,200 km and pass through five states in India and Bangladesh. It will pass through a total of 27 river systems of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, and Bangladesh.

As many as 32 tourists from Switzerland will enjoy the Varanasi-Dibrugarh journey. They will visit 50 tourist spots including world heritage sites, national parks, river ghats, and major cities like Patna in Bihar, Sahibganj in Jharkhand, Kolkata in West Bengal, Dhaka in Bangladesh and Guwahati in Assam.

MV Ganga Vilas cruise is a first-of-its-kind cruise service. The vessel is 62 meters in length, 12 meters in width and comfortably sails with a draft of 1.4 meters. It has three decks and 18 suites on board with a capacity of 36 tourists, with all the amenities to provide a memorable and luxurious experience for the tourists.

“In line with PM’s endeavour to boost river cruise tourism, the huge untapped potential of river cruise will get unlocked with the launch of this service and it will herald a new age of river cruise tourism for India,” said the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
