NEW DELHI: The family of Puneet Khurana, who committed suicide by hanging after allegedly being harassed by his wife and her family members, has stated that they will not perform his last rites until the Delhi Police releases the 54-minute video message he recorded before taking the extreme step. It is another Atul Subhash-type suicide case, where a 35-year-old Puneet Khurana allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Delhi’s Kalyan Vihar, Model Town.

“We touched the foot of Delhi Police but they didn’t give us our brother’s video. The police said they won’t give us this video, asked us to approach the court,” said his sister Leena. His mother, Asha, and sister, while speaking to the media, reiterated that they would not allow the last rites to be performed until they received the video.

“Delhi Police has retrieved this video, which serves as the suicide note of our son. We want to know what he said. We even told the police that they could seize the phone if needed, but at least forward us the video. However, they did not listen to us,” said the family.

The family added that they had been looking for Puneet’s cell phone but couldn’t find it. Later, when the police arrived, it was recovered from the crime scene and seized.

“The phone was switched off at the time. Thankfully, we charged the battery and switched it on in front of us. We saw the video; otherwise, the police would have claimed there was no video,” his sister alleged.

Khurana’s postmortem was conducted on Thursday.

According to the police, Puneet’s family alleged that he was being harassed by his wife, Manika Pahwa, who was also his business partner. The couple had a bakery business together and were in the process of getting a divorce.

Puneet’s family claimed that Manika had threatened him, saying that just because they were getting divorced, it didn’t mean she would be removed from the business. The family also alleged that Puneet was being constantly harassed by Manika.

The police have recovered Puneet’s phone and will be questioning Manika. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Puneet’s death.
