Use G20 presidency to seal UNSC permanent seat, Cong urges PM Modi

The newly-elected President of Congress Mallikarjun Kharge made several suggestions at the all party G20 meet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital, chief among them was capitalizing on the global exposure to seal a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
It is learnt that the grand old party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, who was present in the meeting said it was a matter of pride that India had got the G20 presidency.
Giving several suggestions Kharge asked the Prime Minister to use the opportunity to secure a permanent membership in UN Security Council, on climate control, mount pressure on the US to ease the long appointment waiting times periods for B1/B2 business and tourism visas and seek support of other nations to act against countries providing support to terrorism, the source said.

He, however, also underlined that India had in the past hosted the Non-Aligned Movement summit and Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 1983.

Party sources said that at the meeting, Kharge suggested that the government should also highlight the developments India achieved in last 75 years in its presentations to G20 delegates and showcase its achievements to the visiting delegates in 40 locations while treating them with traditionally famous Indian hospitality.
The source further said that Kharge, while pointing out that several developing countries are facing debt crisis thus India must utilise the G20 presidency to lead the world in helping the countries come out of the crisis like it did in 2008-09.
“Kharge also urged the Prime Minister to use his influence and utilise the opportunity for the country’s benefit and rally other countries to mount pressure on China to stop carrying out incursions at the border,” the source said.
The source further said that Kharge also highlighted the role played by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the 2008 financial recession.
He also did not forgot to point out how former US President Barack Obama had praised the role played by Singh some years ago to deal with recession.
An All Party meeting was held on 5th December to discuss aspects relating to India’s G20 Presidency. The meeting, which was chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, witnessed active participation from political leaders across the length and breadth of India.

Prime Minister stated that India’s G20 Presidency belongs to the entire nation, and is a unique opportunity to showcase India’s strengths to the entire world. Prime Minister also pointed that there is global curiosity and attraction towards India today, which further increases the potential of India’s G20 Presidency.

Prime Minister emphasized the importance of teamwork, and sought the cooperation of all leaders in the organization of various G20 events. He pointed out that the G20 Presidency would help showcase parts of India beyond the conventional big metros, thus bringing out the uniqueness of each part of our nation.

Highlighting the large number of visitors who would be coming to India during India’s G20 Presidency, Prime Minister took note of the potential for promoting tourism and boosting the local economies of the venues where G20 meetings would be organized.
