NEW DELHI: U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan is scheduled to visit New Delhi on January 5-6, 2025, for pivotal discussions with Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. This visit aims to strengthen the U.S.-India strategic partnership, focusing on defense collaboration, technological innovation, and shared security priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.

A key topic on the agenda is the impact of Chinese infrastructure projects, particularly dams, on downstream countries. India has expressed concerns over China’s planned hydropower dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet, which flows into India.

The U.S. views these developments as potential environmental and climate risks to downstream nations. Sullivan’s visit is expected to address these concerns and explore collaborative solutions.

In addition to environmental issues, the discussions will cover strategic technology cooperation, including advancements in artificial intelligence, space exploration, and defense technologies.

The U.S. and India have been working together on the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET), aiming to enhance innovation and defense ties. Sullivan’s visit underscores the commitment to deepening this collaboration.

Sullivan is also scheduled to meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other Indian leaders. He will visit the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, where he plans to engage with young Indian entrepreneurs and deliver a speech highlighting the progress made under the U.S.-India innovation alliance.
