DEHRADUN: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) election promise of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will soon be a reality in Uttarakhand, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Tuesday.

Speaking at an event in New Delhi, Dhami said that the Uttarakhand unit of the BJP had, in the last Assembly polls, promised to the electorate that the first decision of its government will be towards implementing the UCC.

“We have moved ahead in this direction. A committee has been formed and meetings are going on. The committee is speaking to all the stakeholders involved,” he said.

Incidentally, the third meeting of the ‘Expert Committee’ constituted for the draft of the UCC in the hill state was held under the chairpersonship of Justice (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai at Uttarakhand Sadan in the national capital on Tuesday.

Members of the committee Pramod Kohli, former IAS officer Shatrughan Singh, Surekha Dangwal, Doon University vice chancellor Manu Gaur, and social worker and additional local commissioner Ajay Mishra were also present at the meeting.

“Uttarakhand is the center of religion, culture, and spirituality. There should be one law for all. It is our resolve that we will implement it. We are working on Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Prayas,” Dhami told the audience.

Highlighting the Central government’s connectivity projects, Dhami said, “The journey to the hills has become convenient. Now one can reach Delhi from Dehradun by road within hours. After the construction of the elevated road, this journey could be completed in just 2 hours.”

“The prime minister has a special place in his heart for Uttarakhand. Under his supervision, the state government is working on many important schemes including reconstruction in Kedarnath Dham, a master plan of Badrinath Dham, Manaskhand Mandir Mala Mission for mythological temples in Kumaun region, and many others,” he added.

Thanking PM Modi for an opportunity to work as the ‘Mukhya Sewak’, the Uttarakhand CM stated: “We have resolved to make Uttarakhand an ideal state in every field by 2025. We are working to strike a balance between economy and ecology.”

On the issue of Gairsain as permanent capital, the chief minister said that the state government has declared Gairsain as the summer capital. “Gairsain is the centre of possibilities and feelings and development projects are being accomplished in a systematic manner,” added the CM.
