U.S. Navy SEALs, India’s MARCOS, and JMSDF special operators successfully concluded a joint military exercise as part of the annual Malabar 2024 training event.
NEW DELHI: U.S. Navy SEALs, India’s Marine Commandos (MARCOS), and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) special operators successfully concluded a joint military exercise as part of the annual Malabar 2024 training event. This multinational effort reinforced the strategic ties among the United States, India, and Japan, emphasizing a shared commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
The exercise’s special operations phase took place on October 14 in Visakhapatnam, India. It showcased the interoperability and tactical expertise of the participating forces. Among the critical skills honed were beach insertion techniques, maritime interdiction operations, close-quarters combat, and tactical casualty care. The training culminated in a high-stakes capstone exercise involving visit, board, search, and seizure operations, simulating real-world scenarios.
One U.S. Naval Special Warfare (NSW) operator highlighted the significance of the event:
“We value the opportunity to train with our counterparts from India and Japan,” said an NSW operator. “It’s the continued collaboration like this that sharpens our tactics and strengthens our bond with our partners in the region.”

Similarly, another NSW representative noted the operational value of the exercise, emphasizing the creation of realistic scenarios that improve readiness for modern missions:
“After sharing procedures and establishing standards, our combined forces developed realistic special operations scenarios,” said another NSW operator. “This training improved our readiness and interoperability, preparing us to effectively plan and carry out modern missions.”
The exercise underpins the U.S.’s commitment to maintaining regional security and cooperation through high-quality, realistic training with trusted allies. It also strengthens the preparedness of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces and India’s MARCOS, underscoring their critical roles in Indo-Pacific defence strategies.
Malabar 2024 is a high-profile joint naval drill involving the Royal Australian Navy, Indian Navy, JMSDF, and U.S. Navy. Its primary objective is to bolster defence partnerships, enhance operational interoperability, and conduct complex warfighting exercises to address evolving maritime threats.
