NEW DELHI: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed the detection of two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka.

The cases were identified through routine surveillance for respiratory viral pathogens, part of the ICMR’s ongoing efforts to monitor respiratory illnesses across India.

HMPV, a respiratory virus known to cause mild to severe respiratory conditions, is already in circulation globally, including in India. The Union Health Ministry clarified that based on current data from ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), there has been no unusual surge in cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in the country.

The two confirmed cases of HMPV involve infants in Bengaluru involves a 3-month-old female infant admitted to Baptist Hospital with a history of bronchopneumonia. She was diagnosed with HMPV during hospitalization and has since been discharged.

another case is of an 8-month-old male infant, also treated at Baptist Hospital for bronchopneumonia, tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025. He is currently recovering under medical supervision.

Neither infant had a history of international travel, ruling out any link to imported infections.

The Union Health Ministry has assured that the situation is being closely monitored through multiple surveillance mechanisms. The ICMR will continue to track trends in HMPV circulation throughout the year.

The Health Ministry also highlighted that the recent nationwide preparedness drill demonstrated India’s capacity to handle a potential increase in respiratory illnesses.

Public health interventions, if required, can be deployed promptly.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is providing timely updates on the global situation, particularly concerning developments in China.

The Health Ministry has urged the public to remain vigilant and follow basic respiratory hygiene measures to prevent the spread of respiratory infections.

HMPV, often affecting infants and the elderly, can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like illnesses to severe respiratory conditions.

The Ministry emphasized that early diagnosis and prompt medical attention are key to managing the infection effectively.
