JAIPUR: Three students belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) enacted the famous water tank scene from the 1975 Bollywood blockbuster Sholay, although altogether for a different reason.

While Veeru (Dharmendra) climbed the water tank to marry Basanti (Hema Malini), the students sat on the overhead water tank near the Rajasthan University Girls Hostel demanding to extend the date of the student union elections.

Three students, Narendra Yadav, Rahul Meena, and Manu Dadhich, have threatened to stay until the university administration writes a letter to the government requesting an extension of the election date. The students also demanded a letter from the government about the extension of the date of the student union elections. The university administration agreed to the demands, but nothing has been given in writing.

ABVP national secretary Hushyar Meena said that the government is just doing a formality in the name of student union elections.

“The admission process is not over yet. In such a situation, up to 80 per cent of the students will not be able to participate in the electoral process. This is harmful for the democratic structure. ABVP’s dharna will continue till the government and university administration accept our demands. Now we will protest on the road not only in Jaipur but across the state against the government,” Meena said.

The state government has announced student union elections on August 26. The admission process has not been completed in the state. Both the ABVP and the NSUI student organisations had asked the government to postpone the elections.
