NEW DELHI: Former Congress President and MP, Rahul Gandhi, addressed the media at the Parliament in Delhi on Tuesday. There he was seen criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent call for opposition parties to cooperate constructively with the government.
Gandhi highlighted a newspaper report quoting the Prime Minister urging opposition cooperation for effective governance. In response, Gandhi stated that Rajnath Singh, a senior BJP leader, had contacted Mallikarjun Kharge, urging his support for their candidate for Speaker. He emphasised that while the opposition is prepared to support the Speaker, convention dictates that the Deputy Speaker must come from the opposition ranks.
Gandhi pointed out that despite assurances from Rajnath Singh that a return call would be made to Kharge, no such communication has materialised. Adding further he said that this illustrates a discrepancy between the Prime Minister’s public statements on cooperation and the actions of his government.

In a direct critique of Modi’s leadership, Gandhi asserted that the country is increasingly aware that the Prime Minister’s words often fail to translate into meaningful action. He accused Modi of undermining democratic conventions by disregarding the rightful appointment of the Deputy Speaker to the opposition.
The Congress leader concluded by urging transparency and adherence to democratic norms in parliamentary proceedings. The remarks come amidst heightened political tensions over the selection of key parliamentary roles in the upcoming session of the Lok Sabha.
The upcoming sessions are expected to be crucial as the government seeks cooperation from the opposition to pass key legislation and address pressing national issues.
