JAMMU: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has permanently established a National Security Guards (NSG) unit in Jammu City to swiftly respond to any large-scale terrorist incident.

Additionally, a comprehensive security strategy has been implemented to safeguard high-rise buildings, critical installations, and sensitive public areas in and around the city following a thorough security review.

Authorities told The New Indian that a dedicated NSG team is now stationed in Jammu City, ensuring rapid deployment in the event of a terrorist attack. This move by the Home Ministry follows a series of attacks on security forces in various districts of the Jammu region and concerns about potential threats to the city itself.

While the operational strength of the NSG unit remains undisclosed, officials assured that the personnel on site are fully equipped to handle any type of terror situation.

“Previously, NSG commandos had to be airlifted from New Delhi or Chandigarh during emergencies, leading to delays. Now, with their permanent presence in Jammu, response times have been significantly reduced,” they noted.

The deployment of the NSG is a key component of a broader anti-terror strategy developed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP). This strategy focuses on enhancing security for high-risk locations, including multi-story buildings, critical infrastructure, and crowded public spaces.

While officials maintain that terrorist groups cannot currently breach the city’s multi-layered security perimeter, the plan is designed to address any potential threats.

In the event of a prolonged engagement with terrorists, the NSG will act as a backup, supporting frontline forces such as the Special Operations Group (SOG) and other police units.

The SOG and its allied wings remain the primary responders, with other security agencies ready to assist as needed.

Regular security assessments, particularly of high-rise buildings, shopping centres, cinemas, government offices, and other vital locations, have been conducted by SOG teams to ensure preparedness.

These reviews aim to prevent attacks and facilitate immediate action in case of any breach. “A detailed contingency plan has been developed to neutralize threats effectively,” officials told The New Indian.

The Jammu region has witnessed a series of terrorist incidents this year targeting security forces in districts such as Kathua, Udhampur, Kishtwar, Doda, Reasi, Rajouri, and Poonch, resulting in significant casualties among security personnel. However, many terrorists have also been eliminated in counter-operations.

Last month, three infiltrators from Pakistan were killed in the Khour sector of Akhnoor in Jammu district. The terrorists, who had crossed the Line of Control (LoC) with plans for a major attack in the city, were intercepted and neutralized by vigilant Army personnel.
