NEW DELHI: In a surprising twist at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) 2024, a 50-million-year-old Gastropod Fossil was stolen from the Geological Survey of India’s stall. The thief, identified as Manoj Kumar Mishra, a Noida-based hotel employee, was apprehended following a meticulous investigation by the Delhi Police.

The incident occurred on November 21 in Hall Number 4 of the Ministry of Mines Pavilion. The Gastropod Fossil, a valuable artefact weighing one kilogram and measuring 14 cm in length, 10 cm in width, and 12 cm in height, vanished from the exhibit, prompting GSI staff to report the theft. This ancient fossil, representing the preserved remains of an ancient snail or slug, held immense historical and scientific significance.

In response, the Delhi Police launched a detailed investigation, analyzing over 100 CCTV footage from the location and surrounding areas. Their efforts paid off when technical analysis led them to identify and track the suspect to Sector 22, Noida. During a raid, Mishra was apprehended, and the fossil was recovered from his possession. He confessed to the theft during interrogation, revealing his intention to sell the artefact at a high price. The police also seized the entry ticket dated November 21, which Mishra used to gain access to the IITF-2024.

Interestingly, Mishra, despite being a regular visitor to the trade fair with a keen interest in various art forms, had no prior criminal record. His fascination with artefacts led him to steal the fossil, although he seemingly overlooked the high-security measures in place. The incident underscores the vigilance of the Delhi Police and the crucial role of modern technology in solving crimes.

The theft of such a significant artefact has raised awareness about the importance of securing cultural and historical treasures at public exhibitions. With the investigation still ongoing, the authorities are keen to ensure that no further attempts to compromise the integrity of such valuable exhibits occur in the future.
