A five-member BJP committee to probe the alleged violence against its party workers during the recent ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ reached Kolkata on Friday night.

Each committee member will meet the injured BJP workers. The fact-finding committee will also visit the sites where the incidents took place. After taking stock of everything, they will submit a report to the BJP headquarters.

“The committee members will go to the site of the incidents and collect facts and evidence. It will submit its report to the national president soon,” a BJP leader told The New Indian.

JP Nadda, the national president of BJP, had ordered the panel to be set up. The committee consists of Brajlal, MP, Rajya Sabha, Col Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Ex-Union Minister, Aparajita Sarangi, MP-Bhubaneswar, Sunil Jakhar, Ex-MP, and Sameer Oaron, Rajya Sabha MP.

The mega march — ‘Nabanna Chalo’ — was called by the West Bengal unit of the BJP on September 13. It turned violent after clashes broke out between the BJP workers and the police at several places across the state, leading to an ugly situation where the police used water cannons and tear gas.

“The BJP expresses its deep concern and condemnation over the violent incidents in West Bengal and demands the state government to take strict action and book the culprits,” a press note released by the BJP read.

The matter reached the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday. A report was sought from the West Bengal home secretary over BJP’s ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’.

The Kolkata Police also received direction from the Calcutta High Court not to detain anybody “illegally” and ensure no damage to public property.

However, Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of Trinamool Congress (TMC), while on his visit to state-run SSKM hospital to meet the injured ACP, said, “I salute all the officers of the police force for the manner in which they conducted themselves; for showing sheer patience, endurance and remaining in the ambit of the Constitution.”
