In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old woman was killed after her scooty was hit by a car after being dragged under the vehicle for several kilometres in the Sultanpuri area of the Delhi on New Year’s day (Sunday).

The girl was sexually assaulted before being dragged by vehicle and killed, the family of the victim has claimed. All the five men who were inside the car – a Maruti Suzuki Baleno – when the crime was committed have been arrested.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena tweeted that he was “shocked at the monstrous insensitivity of the perpetrators” and was monitoring the case.

“My head hangs in shame over the inhuman crime in Kanjhawla-Sultanpuri today morning and I am shocked at the monstrous insensitivity of the perpetrators. Have been monitoring with @CPDelhi and the accused have been apprehended. All aspects are being thoroughly looked into,” he wrote.

He said the family of the victim was being given all support. “Even as every possible support/help and beyond, to the family of the victim will be ensured, I appeal to all to not resort to opportunistic scavenging. Let’s together work towards a more responsible and sensitive society,” he further wrote.

The Delhi CM also condemned the incident. “What happened to our sister in Kanjhawala is very shameful. I hope that the culprits will be punished severely,” Kejriwal tweeted.

Delhi has seen a stark increase in crime against women. As per NCRB data the national capital saw a 40 per cent rise in crimes against women in 2021 as compared to 2020, with two girls being raped every day last year in the national capital. This makes it one of the most unsafe metros to live in for women according to the latest NCRB or National Crime Records Bureau data.
