Massive exam errors: 500 NCWEB students marked failed, DU launches investigation

NEW DELHI: Delhi University (DU) has launched an investigation following the failure of nearly 500 students from the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) in exams conducted at Jesus and Mary College (JMC). The discrepancies have sparked protests and demands for justice from the affected students.

The affected students staged a protest outside JMC, accusing the college of mishandling their results. They alleged they were unfairly marked “failed,” “Essential Repeat” (ER), or “absent” despite attending the exams and performing well. Students demanded their answer sheets be shown and errors corrected.

DU officials acknowledged inconsistencies in record-keeping and instructed JMC to address the issue. The university also filed a police complaint against a staff member accused of causing discrepancies.

Academic Council member Maya John highlighted that such issues are not new, calling for reforms. “NCWEB centres need a separate examination branch and additional staff to manage their workload. These measures have been long overdue,” she said.

NCWEB, a DU initiative, allows women to pursue degrees through weekend classes and exams held at affiliated colleges like JMC. While the university works on resolving the current crisis, officials assured students that genuine errors would be corrected and revised results released promptly.

As protests continue, students await transparency and swift action to restore confidence in the examination system. The controversy began when first and second-year students reported inconsistencies in their exam results. Some students were marked as “failed,” “Essential Repeat” (ER), or “absent,” despite attending their exams. According to a DU official, these discrepancies were identified after the college received numerous complaints.

The college administration has also filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against a staff member over alleged discrepancies in record-keeping. However, there has been no response from JMC authorities or NCWEB regarding the allegations.

On Monday, hundreds of affected students, joined by members of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) staged a demonstration outside JMC. The students raised slogans against the administration and demanded immediate action, holding posters calling for justice.

The university has assured students that genuine errors would be corrected and revised results released promptly. However, the affected students continue to demand transparency and accountability from the college administration.
