Mahua Moitra’s ouster solidifies INDIA bloc ahead of 2024 polls

KOLKATA: The recent expulsion of Trinamool Congress (TMC) parliamentarian Mahua Moitra has acted as a catalyst in revitalising the unity within the INDIA bloc as preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections gain momentum.

Amidst the ongoing controversy surrounding the cash-for-query case, Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has consistently stood by Moitra, even during uncertain times regarding TMC’s support. Criticising TMC’s silence, Choudhury has taken a proactive stance by writing to Lok Sabha Speaker OM Birla, requesting time to discuss Moitra’s expulsion.

On Friday, In a noteworthy display of solidarity, leaders from the Congress, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, stood alongside Moitra in parliament on Friday. Beyond party lines, Opposition parties set aside their differences to support Moitra, sending a powerful message of unity.

Reacting to Moitra’s expulsion, TMC supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee stated, “I want to congratulate ‘INDIA.’ We are all together and united. Together, we will fight back for Mahua. We will continue to oppose the policies of the BJP government.”

On Wednesday, Kharge had postponed the INDIA bloc meeting after top opposition leaders expressed their non-participation on various grounds. In the recent Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh, Congress and the Samajwadi Party faced disagreements over seat sharing.

The INDIA bloc is scheduled to convene for its seat-sharing meeting in December, emphasising the importance of collaboration and strategic planning in the run-up to the 2024 elections.

The expulsion of TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra marked a significant event as it represented the first instance of someone being ousted from the premises of the new Parliament building.
