Jasprit Bumrah reaches significant milestone by becoming the fastest Indian pacer to claim 200 Test wickets.
NEW DELHI: Jasprit Bumrah, India’s premier fast bowler, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the fastest Indian pacer to claim 200 Test wickets. He accomplished this feat during the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 29, 2024, by dismissing Travis Head.
Bumrah reached this landmark in his 44th Test match, equalling the record of Australian captain Pat Cummins, who also achieved 200 wickets in 44 Tests. This achievement places Bumrah among the elite in international cricket, as he is now the joint 13th fastest bowler globally to reach 200 Test wickets.

In terms of the number of balls bowled to achieve this milestone, Bumrah stands out even more prominently. He has taken the fewest deliveries among Indian bowlers to reach 200 Test wickets, underscoring his efficiency and effectiveness as a fast bowler.
Bumrah’s journey to this milestone has been marked by consistent performances across various conditions and against formidable opponents. Since his Test debut against South Africa in January 2018, he has been a pivotal figure in India’s bowling attack, known for his unique bowling action, pace, and ability to deliver under pressure.

This achievement adds to a series of milestones for Bumrah in 2024. Earlier in the year, during the second Test against England in February, he became the fastest Indian pacer to reach 150 Test wickets, achieving the feat in his 34th match. Additionally, in September, he surpassed the 400-wicket mark in international cricket, becoming the third-quickest Indian seamer to do so after Kapil Dev and Mohammed Shami.
Bumrah’s performance in the ongoing series against Australia has been instrumental for India. His ability to take crucial wickets has put pressure on the Australian batting lineup, contributing significantly to India’s competitive stance in the series. Former players have also noted that Bumrah’s exceptional bowling has raised questions about the performance of key Australian players in the Test side.
As Bumrah continues to break records and set new benchmarks, his contributions are poised to play a crucial role in India’s future successes in Test cricket. His achievements not only highlight his personal excellence but also underscore the growing prominence of Indian fast bowlers on the global stage.
