SRINAGAR: A landmark event in Jammu and Kashmir’s railway development is set to unfold on January 5, with a special inspection train running from Srinagar to Jammu. This milestone is part of plans to establish a new railway division headquartered in Jammu.
Sources confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially announce the Jammu Railway Division via video conferencing on January 6. The announcement will also feature Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
The Union Railway Minister will visit Srinagar Railway Station and the USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link) section on January 5, while CRS Dinesh Chand Deshwal is scheduled to inspect the Reasi-Katra segment of the rail project on January 7 and 8.

The new Jammu Division will fall under the Northern Railway Zone, restructured from the existing Firozpur division. It will include five key sections:
Pathankot-Jammu-Udhampur (now named after Captain Tushar Mahajan)
2. Srinagar-Baramulla
3. Bhogpur Sirwal-Pathankot
4. Batala (excluding)-Pathankot
5. Pathankot-Joginder Nagar
These sections will span a combined length of 742.1 km, with final jurisdiction pending a Detailed Project Report (DPR).

The Railway Ministry has called for the Jammu Division headquarters to be a state-of-the-art facility leveraging advanced information technology. The ministry envisions a lean organizational setup, reallocating posts from the existing Northern Railway workforce.
With Jammu becoming the 69th rail division under 17 railway zones, the ministry aims to expedite the DPR to finalize infrastructure, staff transfers, and operational requirements.
