Indian pharmaceuticals market has the potential to grow to the size of ₹10 lakh crores – a jump of 250 per cent, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday.

Addressing a post-budget webinar on health and medical research, PM Modi said that the feat can be achieved with proper coordination in the industry.

“Today, the market size of the pharma sector is ₹4 lakh crores. It can be worth ₹10 lakh crores with proper coordination between the private sector and academia,” said the PM.

A new programme that had been launched will boost research and innovation in the pharma sector through centres of excellence which will strengthen the economy as well as create new opportunities for employment, he said.

However, the prime minister pointed out the elongated absence of an integrated long-term vision for health for many decades while stressing his government’s focus on accessible healthcare.

“Making medical treatment affordable has been the topmost priority of our government,” he said, adding that India is focusing not only just on the health but overall wellness of an individual.

The prime minister also emphasised the ‘One Earth One Health’ concept.

More than 1.5 lakh health centres are being developed in close proximities across the countries to avail the testing centres and first aid care, he said.

PM Modi also said that the PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission made accessibility of critical healthcare infrastructure in villages and small towns.

260 new medical colleges have been opened in the last few years along with the opening of 157 nursing colleges, he said.

“We should be able to implement the budget provisions within the time limit for decided targets with a concrete roadmap. Realizing all the dreams on the ground before the next budget while taking all stakeholders along will require the benefit of your experience,” he concluded.
