Ground Report: Chaat sellers of Manek Chowk give their take on Gujarat Polls

The chaat sellers of Manek Chowk serve up many a scrumptious dishes to satisfy the late night hunger pangs of the foodies of Gujarat. They also are equally adept at whipping up interesting political conversations. The New Indian team visited the hub of food joints that is not only a symbol of great culinary diversity but also of Ahmedabad’s rocking night life, to catch up with the chaat sellers of this bustling city square and take a bite of their sharp political opinion.

You can sense the post-pandemic euphoria among the food lovers and stall owners of this culinary paradise.

Pav bhaji seller Montu says,”Post-pandemic the business has really picked up. Lot of work has happened on the development front.”

But when you probe them deeper their sense of disappointment comes to the surface.

Imtiyaz Sheik, an old man who has been running his pizza stall for decades, without speaking in explicit terms expressed  grudges against the administration in a muffled tone. “I am running my stall the same way I used to run 50 years ago. What’s the change for people like us. We manage somehow.” he says.

On AAP’s prospects in the state he says, “We can’t predict who will win. Junta is not speaking up. Earlier we had only BJP and Congress. Now we have another option in AAP. We do not know how this will pan out. I think everyone should be given a chance.”

Jay Kumar Yadav who sells one of the most popular food items of Manek Chowk kulfi says, “I am an out and out BJP supporters. There are some problems of running the stalls. Sometimes police creates some troubles. I hope these issues related to timing of the market are taken care. This will really make our life easy.”

The Gujarat Assembly elections 2022 will be held in two phases on December 1 and December 5. Voting for 89 seats of the Assembly will take place in the first phase while for the rest 93 in phase two. The votes will be counted on December 8 along with Himachal Pradesh.
