NEW DELHI: The F1 Diversity and Inclusion Charter was created to address the underrepresentation of diverse groups in motorsport, particularly Black individuals. The initiative draws inspiration from The Hamilton Commission, led by Sir Lewis Hamilton and the Royal Academy of Engineering. Their 2021 report, titled “Accelerating Change: Improving Representation of Black People in UK Motorsport,” highlighted systemic barriers that hinder Black talent from entering and progressing in the sport. The report also presented ten recommendations, forming the foundation for this significant step toward inclusivity.
The charter represents a collective commitment by all 10 Formula 1 teams, Formula 1 itself, and the FIA, with support from the Royal Academy of Engineering. Its aim is to create a culture that not only welcomes but actively supports diverse talent, ensuring equal opportunities for individuals to participate and excel in motorsport. By addressing these barriers, the initiative seeks to open doors for underrepresented groups and foster a more inclusive environment.

At its core, the charter’s mission is “to identify and remove barriers to participation, enabling anyone to access, contribute to, and enjoy motorsport.” The vision aligns with FIA’s drive for innovation and performance, recognizing that diversity is a vital ingredient in maintaining its competitive edge. The sport seeks to benefit from the varied perspectives and experiences that diverse talent can bring to the table.
The framework of the charter is built on four pillars: attract, retain, develop, and engage. These focus areas include targeted efforts to attract individuals from underrepresented communities, creating inclusive environments to retain them, and providing development opportunities to support career progression. Additionally, the charter emphasizes stakeholder engagement to promote continuous improvement and innovation across the sport.
Prominent voices within motorsport have expressed strong support for the initiative. Sir Lewis Hamilton stated, “Our sport is rightly recognized for its elite performance and innovation, and we are clear that the only way to maintain and improve those exceptional standards is to welcome diversity of thought, ideas, and experiences.” Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali echoed this sentiment, saying, “The sport is fiercely competitive, and we’re all committed to employing the very best talent. We know from The Hamilton Commission report that there are opportunities for us to work collectively to both find and nurture that talent.” Dr. Hayaatun Sillem, CEO of the Royal Academy of Engineering, remarked, “Motorsport inspires and influences hundreds of millions of people around the globe. Formula 1 exemplifies the spirit of creativity, innovation, and excellence that drives so many engineers, wherever they work.”
