Former Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb had a close shave when his cavalcade met with an accident in Panipat district of Haryana on Monday.

His car was hit by a truck when it was moving along the Grand Trunk (GT) Road in Panipat. The BJP leader was travelling from New Delhi to Chandigarh.

According to locals, his car nearly overturned on the road. Some locals rescued him and his driver and took him to a nearby hospital. He sustained some minor injuries in the accident.

Deb, who resigned as the chief minister of Tripura last year, is currently serving as a Rajya Sabha member. He is also in charge of the Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and frequently travels to the state for party meetings and organisational initiatives.

After serving as the chief minister for more than four years, Deb stepped down in May 2022 in the backdrop of infightings in the state BJP unit. He was replaced by party leader Manik Saha.

This is not the first time when Deb has escaped accidents. In August 2021, a car carrying three people broke into his security cover when he was on a walk near his official residence in Agartala. Sensing imminent danger, Deb jumped aside and escaped unhurt but one of his security personnel received some injuries.
