NEW DELHI: A 31-year-old man from West Delhi was detected with Monkeypox in the national capital. This is the first case of such disease in Delhi and the fourth in India.

The man has no history of foreign travel so far. He had gone to Himachal Pradesh and upon returning complained about fever and skin rashes, said the sources.

After he complained of high fever and skin lesions, his sample was sent to NIV (National Institute of virology) in Pune. His report has confirmed the virus in his body, the source added.

The man, admitted to Maulana Azad Medical College Hospital, is under observation, said a government source.

Previously, three cases of Monkeypox came from Kerala and all are under treatment in the hospital.

The Union health ministry has already advised all states and union territories to ensure proper screening of the people arriving from foreign countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has already declared it a global health emergency. Over 16,000 cases have been reported across the globe, so far.

Monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease with similar symptoms to smallpox, with less clinical severity. It is caused by human transmission.
