NEW DELHI: Almost after five years and four months, Delhi’s Lieutenant governor (LG) Anil Baijal on Wednesday resigned citing personal reasons.

According to LG House sources, Baijal sent his resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday afternoon.

He was appointed the LG on December 31, 2016, after Najeeb Jung announced his resignation from the post.

Baijal is a 1969 batch IAS officer from the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre. He has served as Union Home Secretary under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

However, he was shifted to the urban development ministry by the Congress-led UPA government. While in the Urban Development Ministry, Baijal oversaw the planning and implementation of the Rs 60,000 crore Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

During his stint at LG Delhi, Baijal had several face-offs with the Arvind Kejriwal government.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal along with his cabinet colleagues had held a dharna at the LG House alleging that the bureaucrats were not cooperating with them.
