NEW DELHI: The Centre has told the Supreme Court it will implement all recommendations made by a seven-member expert panel on NEET UG reforms. The panel was tasked with reviewing the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) functioning after controversies in last year’s NEET UG exam.
On August 2, 2024, the Supreme Court refused to nullify NEET UG 2024. The court stated there was not enough evidence of systemic malpractice or a question paper leak to compromise the exam’s integrity.
The panel, chaired by former ISRO chief K Radhakrishnan, was set up to propose reforms for a more transparent and secure NEET UG. Its scope was expanded by the Supreme Court to include additional concerns.
These included lapses like a security breach at an exam centre in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. The breach allowed unauthorized access to question papers.
Other issues included transporting question papers via e-rickshaws and distributing incorrect question papers.
The panel submitted its report to the Centre. On Thursday, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed a bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra of the government’s plan to adopt the recommendations. “We are going to implement all the recommendations, and it (matter) can be listed after six months,” Mehta said.
The bench adjourned the case for three months, scheduling it for April 2025. The report has not been submitted in full to the court due to its sensitive content, including question paper printing details.
The expert panel includes Randeep Guleria, B J Rao, Ramamurthy K, Pankaj Bansal, Aditya Mittal, and Govind Jaiswal. Its mandate covers exam security, data protection, technological upgrades, mental health support for students, and training for NTA staff.
The Supreme Court extended the panel’s report deadline on October 21, 2024. The government’s decision to act on the recommendations marks a step toward securing and improving the NEET UG process.
