A controversial moment arose during the day when Indian captain Virat Kohli clashed with Australian debutant Sam Konstas. Kohli was seen walking aggressively toward Konstas, closing a 50-meter distance before an on-field collision ensued. The incident drew widespread criticism and led to boos from the crowd. Kohli was later fined 20% of his match fee and received one demerit point for inappropriate physical contact.

The MCG pitch offered a balanced contest between bat and ball. Early seam movement tested the batsmen, but conditions improved as the day progressed, favoring stroke play. Australia’s decision to bat first appeared vindicated as their batsmen capitalized on these conditions.
