The asset of 84 councillors looking for another term in the ensuing Delhi civil polls increased by an average of 49 per cent to ₹4.37 crores in the last five years, according to an analysis of their sworn affidavits.

As many as 55 councillors of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and five of the Congress added an average of more than ₹1 crore to their wealth since they got elected in 2017.

Properties of 22 councillors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which rules Delhi, grew by an average of ₹43 lakhs or 36 per cent to ₹1.2 crore, as per the non-profit Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The top five councillors on the list belong to the BJP. Vineet Vohra, the BJP councillor from Paschim Vihar in North Delhi, was the highest-grosser. His properties grew by ₹28.6 crores, an increase of 307 per cent, to over ₹37 crores in the last five years.

The BJP won all three civic bodies in the last elections in 2017.

On April 5, the Rajya Sabha followed the lower house of parliament to pass the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 202 – the legislation which unified the three bodies.

Voting for the 250-ward MCD will take place on December 4 and the results will be declared on December 7.
