CM Himanta: Rohingyas Using Assam To Reach Delhi, J&K Illegally

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that Rohingya Muslims were using Tripura and Assam as a transit route into the country, on Wednesday.

Sarma said during a media interaction that the Rohingya Muslim saturation had reached such an extent that the resident Muslims were having to move to other states to earn a livelihood. “Our local Muslim population also go out of Assam to earn bread. We are a fully saturated state as far as foreigners are concerned. Whatever cases we have detected, the touts have put Assam and Tripura as transit routes,” he said.

The CM further revealed that the case received national significance when Home Minister Amit Shah referred the case to the National Investigation Agency. “Mostly you will see Rohingyas in other parts of India. Even during my Chattisgarh visit, people were complaining about the Rohingya issue,” he said.

The matter initially came to light when the Karimganj District police intercepted a group of Rohingyas heading to Delhi by train. The investigation revealed a bigger plot including the Rohingyas, as Assam DIG Partha Sartha Mahanta revealed that the Indo-Bangaldesh Border in Tripura and West Bengal are the entry points facilitated by a network of touts in Bangladesh and India. The Special Task Force led by Mahanta has managed to apprehend and seize a few touts with fake documents.

The Assam police revealed that their preferred destination via Assam are Delhi, Jammu, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kerala.

“We are checking the buses and trains. We have so far detected that after the Assam CM started monitoring, we ramped up our operations,” said the Assam DIG. Till now, the Assam police have detected 137 Rohingyas and 304 Bangladesh immigrants entering illegally.

Further, during the press conference Sarma highlighted the findings of the NCRB’s latest report that demarcated a dramatic 50 per cent decline in the state’s crime rate since 2021, which also illustrated a drop in crime rates against women and children.

The Assam CM highlighted that these developments were a major turnaround in law and order statistics in the state. He said, “I am sure by 2023 when NCRB data will be released, our position will improve. When you stop the crime cases and establish a declining trend, we have seen a turnaround, probably a first after 1979,” added Himanta Biswa Sarma.
