The New Indian speaks to BJP MLA from Hawa Mahal, Balmukund Acharya

JAIPUR: BJP MLA Balmukund Acharya, representing Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal constituency, catapulted into the spotlight when he issued directives for the closure of all non-vegetarian food stalls in the Hawa Mahal area, sparking a public debate on the delicate balance between tradition and contemporary commerce. However, Acharya has now revealed that his primary focus lies in the reconstruction of vandalised temples.

During an exclusive conversation with The New Indian, Acharya discussed his motive to construct and reconstruct ancient temples. He expressed deep concerns about the plight of historical temples, built by kings and merchants. These cultural treasures, Acharya lamented, have fallen victim to intentional damage, such as the destruction of statues and the demolition of temples to make way for toilets.

“We have 150-200 ancient temples that were built under the patronage of kings and wealthy merchants. These include stepwells, temples, and wells, all of which are part of our ancient heritage. Unfortunately, many of them have been damaged; in some places, statues have been vandalised, and temples have been replaced with toilets and dustbins through illegal encroachments,” he said.

Acharya emphasised that the deliberate harm inflicted through illegal encroachments, with unauthorised possession encroaching upon sacred sites. He underscored a longstanding request for a thorough investigation into these cases to facilitate the restoration of ancient temples.

“Our objective is to revive and reconstruct these temples so that they can be used for worship and rituals in a proper manner. This has been our consistent demand, and there is nothing inappropriate in it,” he said.

When questioned about the roadmap for executing this agenda, Acharya stated, “We have identified all the affected places, meticulously selected them, and submitted comprehensive reports to nearby police stations, formally filing complaints.

“We have expressed our earnest desire to undertake the restoration process. Now, with the BJP government in power, we are committed to moving forward with any legally permissible work according to established procedures.”

Acharya has become a central figure in the aftermath of the BJP’s resounding victory in Rajasthan, securing 115 out of 199 seats and displacing the Ashok Gehlot-led government. Acharya secured the Hawa Mahal seat by a slim margin of 974 votes over Congress veteran leader R R Tiwari.
