NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has written to the Union Home Ministry seeking permission to probe the killing of Colonel Viplav Tripathi, who was killed along with his wife and eight-year-old son along with four other soldiers in a terror attack in Manipur recently.
According to NIA sources, the anti-terror probe agency had sought permission to register a FIR and go ahead in the probe to find the killers of Tripathi few days earlier.

Tripathi, who was commanding officer of Assam Rifles, was brutally killed in an ambush attack by terrorists in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on November 13 this year.
The agency source said that the agency wants to probe how Colonel Tripathi was ambushed and brutally killed in Manipur. The agency also wants to know about the role of the local people who might have helped the terrorists to lay an ambush and attack him and his team members.
Two proscribed militant organisations – the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) – jointly claimed responsibility for the ambush at Sehkan village in Churachandpur district of the North-eastern state.
The NIA source said that the agency also wants to probe the role of these two terror organisations, which had claimed responsibility of killing Tripathi along with others.
The source said that it will soon get an approval from the Home Ministry to go ahead in the case.
The November 13 incident was the first major attack on security forces since June 4, 2018, when an Army convoy was targeted in Chandel district resulting in the death of 18 personnel and injury to others.
