NEW DELHI: A sensational victory in the capital city of Rajasthan was the call of the hour for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Jaipur’s Vidhyadhar Nagar constituency with royalty Princess Diya Kumari emerging victorious with a massive margin of 71,368 votes.

On the other hand, Congress’ Sitaram Agarwal lost a humiliating defeat after a long and hard fight. However, Kumari’s campaign to claim the seat in the constituency went by swimmingly without much effort, securing a whopping 1,58,516 votes, as opposed to Agarwal, who was only able to secure 87,148 votes. This defeat reflects the Grand Old Party’s latest attempt at breaking into the Rajput heartland but with little avail.

Previously in 2018, the Congress had fielded Agarwal with the expectation to break into the legislative scene in the national capital, however, even then it experienced another humiliating defeat, garnering 64,367 votes. On the other hand, Narpat Singh Rajvi of the BJP emerged victorious claiming the BJP dominion with 95,599 votes. In the current assembly elections, Rajvi was promoted as the BJP face from Chittorgarh, however, he suffered an unpredictable defeat to BJP rebel and rebel candidate, Chandrabhan Aakya.

A similar trend was seen in 2013, when Rajvi emerged victorious from his stronghold in the Vidhyadhar Nagar constituency with a whopping 1,07,068 votes, with Congress’ Vikram Singh Shekhawat attaining 69,155 votes, with a margin of 37,913 votes. Shekhawat was not accorded a ticket in the recently concluded assembly elections, being the Parliamentary Congress Committee general secretary.

Presently, the BJP followed its pattern of presenting parliamentarians as their CM hopefuls across the three states where it emerged victorious, with Kumari also being another example of the pattern, having been an MP from Rajsamand Lok Sabha constituency.

Kumari is slated to be a close contender to the Chief Minister’s Office in the state as the successor to the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government.
