Reports reveal that the turmoil unfolded when armed militants ambushed the Eastern Shine School’s ground, where police officials were engaged in a football match. During this brazen attack, the militants opened fire, and Sub-Divisional Police Officer Chingtham Anand Kumar, stationed at Moreh, found himself caught in the crossfire between state forces and suspected Kuki militants along the Indo-Myanmar Border.
Tragically, Kumar sustained a severe gunshot wound to his abdomen, leading to his untimely demise. It is believed that he fell victim to a sniper’s bullet, becoming the sole casualty from the state police in this harrowing crossfire.

In the aftermath of his tragic death, Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, took to official channels to condemn the killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand. He characterised it as a “cold-blooded killing” and expressed deep sorrow, acknowledging Kumar’s dedication to serving and protecting the people.
“Deeply saddened by the cold-blooded killing of SDPO Chingtham Anand, OC Moreh Police this morning. His dedication to serve and protect the people will always be remembered. The perpetrators will be brought to justice,” he said.
Reports emerging from the Moreh Police Station suggest that the ambush had been planned with the intention of targeting the Superintendent of the Special Commando. However, it was SDPO Kumar who bore the brunt of the assault.
In the wake of this devastating loss, Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh convened an emergency meeting to address the situation and devise strategies to combat the escalating militancy.
During the meeting, the cabinet made significant decisions, including offering an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the next of kin of SDPO Kumar.

Additionally, they resolved to initiate a thorough investigation into the case and pledged to provide employment in government services to the family members of the deceased.
At present, both sides remain embroiled in a continued exchange of cross-border fire, further underscoring the challenges faced in restoring peace and stability to the region.
