Extortion Case: Former Top Cop Param Bir Singh Appears Before Mumbai Crime Branch

MUMBAI: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh, who had been missing since May this year, finally appeared before the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Thursday.

Singh is facing several cases of extortion and was declared a Proclaimed Offender (PO) by a Mumbai Court. His appearance before the Crime Branch was in connection with a case of extortion registered at Goregaon police station.

Singh has been named as one the main accused in this case which was later transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation.

A former top cop of the Mumbai Police, who belongs to 1988 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), Maharashtra cadre, Singh flew from Chandigarh and landed at the Mumbai Airport on Thursday morning and appeared before the Unit no -11 of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

He had remained incommunicado for 231 days and was traced to Chandigarh on Wednesday.

Singh later spoke to the media persons that he will join the investigation as directed by the court. When asked further, he said that he will cooperate with the investigation.

On Wednesday, Singh told media persons that he was in Chandigarh and will be flying to Mumbai to record his statement before the Investigating Officer (IO) of the concerned case. Pertinently, Parambir Singh has been granted protection from arrest by the Supreme Court.

It may be recalled that Param Bir Singh has not reported to his office since May 2021. He had accused the then Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh for indulging in brazen extortion and that he had set a goal to collect Rs 100 crore in a month. Singh made startling allegations in his letter written to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray after he was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner. He was transferred after Inspector Sachin Waze posted with Crime Branch was arrested in connection with the murder of a businessman Mansukh Hiren. It was alleged that Waze had used Hiren’s SUV to transport explosive near business tycoon Mukesh Ambani’s residence known as Antilia.

Param Bir Singh is currently posted as Director General (DG) of Maharashtra Home Guard.
