NEW DELHI: Bihar’s RJD MLA Phate Bahadur Singh has hurt Hindu sentiments by making controversial statements regarding Goddess Durga. The RJD legislator from Dehri in Bihar’s Rohtas district has gone on to say that the revered Goddess in Hindu traditions is ‘a mythical concept and a fabricated story.’

The RJD legislator did not stop there and went ahead to proclaim himself ‘a descendant of Mahishasura’ and stated that Mahishasura was his ancestor. He also expressed objections about the relationship between Goddess Durga and Lord Shiva by questioning the authenticity of their association.

In response to the question of whether you consider Durga as a goddess, Singh said that this is a mythical story. He questioned where Goddess Durga was when the country was enslaved by Britishers. “According to the orthodox belief, there are 33 crore deities in the country, but when India became enslaved, the British government came to India, and at that time, the population of Indians was 30 crore. I want to ask those orthodox individuals who wrote that Durga fought with Mahishasura with millions of troops and killed Mahishasura. When the British government made India a slave with a handful of people, what was Mother Durga doing? Where was the ten-armed weapon,” he asked.

As a result, there was a public outcry against the RJD legislator in Rohtas, where people burned effigies of him and protested vehemently. The legislator further deemed the expenditure on worship and rituals as illegitimate. He said that all this spending is unnecessary. If there is no historical evidence of Durga, why do people spend so much?

He said, “If she was the goddess of all three worlds, then does India have only three worlds? If Durga Devi resided here and had her avatar here, then why not in the entire world? I say, which kind of Hindus are we? Those who, in their casteist beliefs, created imaginary deities also made the OBC, SC, and ST people into Shudras.”

Furthermore, the RJD MLA targeted the Brahmins with controversial statements by claiming that they lacked moral integrity and pointed out that even the British opposed making Brahmins judges.
