NEW DELHI: A case of same-sex marriage has emerged following the Supreme Court’s refusal to enact legislation permitting marriage between homosexual partners. In Bihar, two young women, Nisha Kumari (aged 18) and Komal Kumari (aged 20), recently tied the knot in a temple in Jamui, expressing their deep love for each other. This event has attracted significant attention.

The duo, who got married on Tuesday, asserting their willingness to sacrifice their lives for their love, expressed, “We will live together, and if separated, we will give our lives.”

The case is said to be from the Jamui and Lakhisarai districts. One of the girls is from the Digghi village in the Laxmipur police station area of Jamui, while the other is from the Kusunda village in the Halsi police station area of Lakhisarai district.

The two initially crossed paths at a family wedding, and from there, they developed a close friendship that eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship. Subsequently, they made the choice to tie the knot, and their decision to live together as a same-sex couple has taken many people in their local community by surprise.

This situation arises at a juncture when the highest court has rejected the legal acknowledgment of same-sex marriages. The court has expressed that the responsibility for recognising same-sex marriage as a distinct legal entity rest with the Parliament and state legislatures, with the government determining associated rights.

Nisha Kumari, the daughter of Ashok Taanti from Jamui, and Komal Kumari, also known as Kumkum, the daughter of Kaameshwar Taanti from Lakhisarai, have been romantically involved for approximately one and a half years. As they both reside in the same district, they began to meet regularly. After two and a half years, they decided to get married.
