NEW DELHI: A press release by Shalby Multispeciality Hospitals in Ahmedabad ruled out claims of dog bites being the cause of Wagh Bakri Tea Group’s Executive Director, Parag Desai’s death on Monday, amid speculation and hate-filled outrage flooding the internet against stray dogs in the country.
According to hospital officials, Desai’s death was caused by a head injury that he had suffered after falling down. “It was stated that the patient fell down after being chased by dogs but apparently, there were no dog bite marks on his body,” the statement read.
Nonetheless, the hospital authorities also said that accidents caused due to stray animals had become a concerning trend of late. Nishita Shukla, Group COO of the hospital, remarked, “Lately, we have been getting a lot of cases due to dog bites or accidents caused by stray animals.”
Shukla added that Desai had been admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital. The 49-year-old was later discharged at the request of his relatives, however, he succumbed later on Sunday.
Desai had met with the accident while on a morning walk near his residence around Iscon Ambli Road where a few stray dogs had started chasing him. Inadvertently, he fell, crashing to the ground which injured his head. According to medical reports, he had suffered multiple injuries, with his death being caused by a heavy brain haemorrhage.
The company also confirmed the death in a public post on Instagram that said, “With profound grief, we regret to inform the sad demise of our beloved Parag Desai.”
Following the news of his death, Tech Mahindra MD and CEO CP Gurnani took to X to offer his condolences and raised several questions regarding the “stray dog menace” in the country.
He said, “I can understand pet parents and animal lovers advocating animal rights. However, it is a fact that strays ARE a threat. Will a national programme for mass vaccination and sterilisation of street dogs help?”

Presently, Desai is survived by his wife, Vidisha Desai, and daughter, Parisha Desai.
