NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an emotional pitch to parliamentarians on the first day of the special session in Lok Sabha, calling the old parliament building a “sacred ground” made resonant by the voices of the 7,500 representatives who have served there over the past 75 years.
“When a person who believes in democracy visits this place 50 years from now, he will experience the resonance of India’s soul that used to reverberate here,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister also remembered the Indians who worked hard to construct the old building, and the new building that is now nearing completion. He said that the new building is a symbol of “New India,” which is filled with “new belief, newfound self-confidence, new enthusiasm, new dreams, new resolutions, and a new capability for the country.”
Modi spoke about India’s rising dominance in the world, and the success of missions like Chandrayaan-3 and the G20 presidency. He said that these successes are a matter of pride for all Indians and reflect the country’s growing capabilities.
The Prime Minister also dedicated his speech to the press and praised the journalists who have devoted their lives to reporting on the workings of Parliament. He said that their pens have been “mirrors” that have created an atmosphere of understanding and empathy among Parliament members.

Modi also mentioned the various programs and policies implemented by the BJP government in the old Parliament building, including the “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” mantra, the resolution of Article 370, the implementation of the GST, and the passage of the One Rank, One Pension scheme.
In conclusion, Modi said that the old Parliament building is a “witness to history” and a “symbol of democracy.” He said that it is a place where “the voices of the people have been heard and their aspirations have been realized.”
Prime Minister Modi’s speech in Lok Sabha was a significant event, as it marked the last time that the old Parliament building would be used for a formal session. The building is currently undergoing a massive renovation project and is expected to be completed in 2024.
