NEW DELHI: India’s presidency of the G20 has been a success so far, with the country playing a leading role in shaping the global agenda.
In a press briefing on the second day of the summit, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said that the G20 has contributed to making India “world ready and world India ready.”
He pointed to the adoption of the “G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration” as a major accomplishment of the Indian presidency. Notably, many feared that the New Delhi summit might end without any declaration over contentions on language for the Russia-Ukraine war.

The declaration focuses on promoting strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth; accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals; and envisaging a green development pact for sustainable development.
Dr Jaishankar also highlighted the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20, which he said was “a matter of particular satisfaction” to India. He said that the Indian presidency has also been “exceptional” in terms of its organization and program, with events being held in 60 cities across the country.

The minister also spoke about the focus points of the declarations adopted by the leaders today. He said that the declarations “endorse high-level principles on lifestyle for sustainable development, voluntary principles on hydrogen, the Chennai principles for a sustainable and resilient blue economy, and the Deccan principles for food security and nutrition among others.”
Dr Jaishankar acknowledged the “transformative and inclusive” role of technology while stressing on digital public infrastructure. He said that the Indian presidency proposal of a “one future alliance” has also been noted.

The minister concluded by saying that the G20 has reaffirmed the fundamental importance of gender equality and committed to halve the digital gender gap by 2030. He said that the summit has also been an opportunity to showcase India’s culture and heritage.
The G20 summit is a major opportunity for India to showcase its leadership on the global stage. The Indian presidency has been a success so far, and Jaishankar’s press briefing highlighted the many achievements that have been made. The summit is still ongoing, and it remains to be seen what other agreements will be reached. However, it is clear that India is playing a leading role in shaping the global agenda.
