NUH (HARYANA): Four days after deadly communal clashes, the BJP-led Haryana government on Friday launched an anti-encroachment drive targeting illegal Muslim immigrants.

According to officials, the police have found the involvement of Rohingya immigrants from Myanmar in the communal violence which killed at least three persons in Nuh district on July 31.

On Friday noon, a bulldozer – which has been used to demolish the homes of suspected criminals by BJP governments – removed shanties and other temporary structures erected on the public land in Tauru.

The land belongs to the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA).

The communal violence, which broke out after a Hindu procession was attacked with stones and bricks near Nalhad village, has claimed the lives of at least six people in Nuh and adjoining Gurugram district.

Tensions still prevail and internet services remain suspended in Gurugram, Nuh, Palwal and Faridabad. Several columns of police and paramilitary forces are still deployed in Nuh and Gurugram district as authorities rush to instil a sense of confidence in the public and restore normalcy.

During the violence, a Shiva Temple, situated in the lap of the hillocks of Aravali in Muslim-dominated Nalhad village, was attacked by mobs who fired at distance. Rioters later set dozens of public and private vehicles, including those of Shiva devotees, on fire.

As the violence spread to other areas, an angry mob stormed a police station, vandalized it and set the parked vehicle ablaze. They hijacked a private bus and rammed it into the walls of the police station.

Teams of policemen from neighbouring Gurugram were also attacked by armed rioters, resulting in the death of two home guards on the stop and injuries to many others, including a deputy commissioner of police (DCP).

As the anger spread, two mosques were set on fire and dozens of shops belonging to the Muslim community were vandalized in Gurugram. A mosque imam from Bihar was killed by unidentified persons in Sector 57.
