NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi turned emotional on Thursday in his address to the nation on ocassion of Guru Nanak Dev’s birthday, making a big announcement that his government has decided to repeal all three farm laws that were introduced last year.

“May be there was a mistake in our honest commitment to the nation. But with a clean heart and state of mind, I today, on this big occasion announce to withdraw these bills,” he said.

The announcement that coincides with birthday of founder of Sikhism has come as a surprise and will bring relief to the protesting farmers.

Modi dwelt upon preachings of Guru Nanak to drive his point home.

Modi has routinely visited Sikh shrines and stood for Sikh scriptures and texts over the last two decades.

In May this year, he made a surprise early morning visit to the 17th-century Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib to offer prayers on the occasion of 400th Prakash Parab or the birth anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Last year in December, Modi had gone to pray at the historic Gurudwara Rakabganj Sahib, where the pious body of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji was cremated.

“I felt extremely blessed. I, like millions around the world am deeply inspired by the kindnesses of Guru Teg Bahadur Ji,” he had said.
