HM Amit Shah calls BJP Bengal president Sukanta Majumdar to check on deployment of central forces; Sources say HM Shah also advises Majumdar on poll strategy
KOLKATA: Just days ahead of the West Bengal panchayat election, Union Home minister Amit Shah rings BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, inquiring about the present situation and central forces’ deployment.
Majumdar was campaigning for the party in Kushmondi in South Dinajpur district in West Bengal when he got a call from the Union Home minister at around 1 pm on July 4.
Majumdar said that HM Shah asked him whether central forces had been deployed properly or not.
When The New Indian asked Majumdar regarding the same, he said, “HM Shah wanted to know about the situation in the state as the poll is just around the corner. He wanted to know the situation on the ground. He also checked on the deployment of the central forces.”
Sources told The New Indian that HM Shah, who is known for his political acumen and electoral strategy, also advised Majumdar on a strategic approach ahead of the panchayat election.
It is to be mentioned here that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on July 3 agreed to the deployment of an additional 485 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) as well as State Armed Police Forces for the West Bengal panchayat election. A communication in this regard was sent to the West Bengal State Election Commission (WBSEC) on Monday.
Earlier, 315 companies of the central forces were deployed for the panchayat election.
Majumdar also said that HM Shah also spoke about many other issues related to the state.
HM Shah’s call to Majumdar ahead of the panchayat election holds significance as it shows that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership is taking the election very seriously.
Sources told The New Indian that the election is significant as the party is looking at it to strategize for the all-important 2024 Lok Sabha election.
Sources also told The New Indian that the BJP leadership is confident about its chances in the areas that are considered its strongholds. “TMC’s effort to gain people’s confidence will be futile because the true facet of the party is now visible to everyone,” a party leader said.
The state has a total of 3,317 gram panchayats. There are 928 seats across 22 zilla parishads, 9,730 panchayat samiti seats, and 63,229 gram panchayat seats.
