NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statement indicating that the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’, currently situated over the east-central Arabian Sea, is expected to intensify further by Friday.
The cyclone, located southeast of Porbandar in Gujarat, is projected to move in a north-northwest direction over the next three days.
According to the IMD, “It would intensify further gradually during the next 48 hours and move nearly north-northwestwards during the next three days.”
Referred to as ‘Biporjoy’, the cyclone has moved north-northwestwards at a speed of six kilometers per hour in the past six hours.
The state government of Gujarat, where the cyclone remains southwest of Porbandar’s coastal district, has assured its full preparedness.
As of June 8, gale wind speeds of 125-135 kilometers per hour, with gusts reaching up to 150 kilometers per hour, prevail over the eastcentral Arabian Sea and the adjacent areas of westcentral and south Arabian Sea.

These wind speeds are likely to increase, reaching 130-140 kilometers per hour with gusts up to 155 kilometers per hour over the same area from morning. Further intensification is anticipated, with speeds reaching 135-145 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 160 kilometers per hour by noon on June 8.
The IMD predicts squally weather conditions, with wind speeds ranging from 35-45 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 55 kilometers per hour, along and off the Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts.
Sea conditions are expected to be phenomenal over the central Arabian Sea and adjoining south Arabian Sea, while rough sea conditions are anticipated along and off the Karnataka-Goa-Maharashtra coasts, as observed by the IMD.

To ensure safety, the IMD has called for a total suspension of fishing operations in the east-central Arabian Sea and adjacent west-central and south Arabian Sea until June 12. Similar precautions are advised for the west-central and adjoining northwest Arabian Sea between June 12 and 14.
Fishermen are strictly advised against venturing into the central Arabian Sea until June 13 and the adjacent areas of the north Arabian Sea on June 12 and 13.
The IMD emphasizes the importance of fishermen currently at sea to promptly return to the coast, taking necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and vessels.
