Veteran actor Gufi Paintal is best known as Shakuni Mama in TV serial Mahabharat.

NEW DELHI: Gufi Paintal, the acclaimed actor renowned for his portrayal of Shakuni Mama in the iconic TV series Mahabharat (1980), passed away in Mumbai on Monday due to age-related health issues. He was 79 years old.

In a statement, the actor’s family said, “With profound grief, we announce the sad demise of our father, Mr Gufi Paintal (Shakuni Mama). He passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by family.”

According to Gufi’s nephew, Hiten Paintal, the veteran actor suffered a heart failure and breathed his last at approximately 9 am. Gufi had been battling ill health for a long time and was admitted to the hospital on May 31 when his condition deteriorated.

Apart from his notable acting career, Gufi also ventured into directing television shows and films. He helmed the movie Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, which depicted the life of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a 16th-century devotee of Krishna, recognized as an incarnation of the god by followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. The film was produced by Pawan Kumar with music composed by Ravindra Jain.

Additionally, Gufi worked with BR Films as an associate director, casting director, and production designer.

He was the brother of the renowned comedian Paintal, who appeared in popular films such as Satte Pe Satta, Rafoo Chakkar, and Parichay, among others.

The late actor’s repertoire includes performances in films like Dillagi (1978), Des Pardes (1978), Daava (1997), and Samrat & Co (2014). He portrayed the role of Akshay Kumar’s maternal uncle in the 1994 movie Suhaag.

In addition to his remarkable contribution to Mahabharat, Gufi Paintal graced the small screen in various TV shows, including Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap, Mrs. Kaushik Ki Paanch Bahuein, Karmaphal Daata Shani, and Karn Sangini. His last appearance was in the TV show Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki.

The news of Gufi Paintal’s demise has left the entertainment industry mourning the loss of a talented and versatile actor. His memorable performances will forever remain etched in the hearts of his fans and colleagues.
