NEW DELHI: Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has called upon the US-ally Ukraine to give “major concessions” to Russia in order to end the ongoing war – which he thinks does not affect interests of Washington DC.

In a TV interview, the youngest 2024 hopeful – who is up against the uphill task of defeating former President Donald Trump in primaries – argued that the war in Ukraine should not be a top foreign policy priority for the United States, instead emphasizing the need to address the growing alliance between China and Russia.

“I think the job of the US president is to look after American interests. And what I think the number one threat to the US military right now, our top military threat, is the Sino-Russian alliance,” he said.
The entrepreneur-turned-politician argued that the US was driving Russia into “China’s hand” by fighting by further arming Kyiv against Russia.

Ramaswamy proposed that US should end its military aid to Ukraine if Russia ends its alliance with China. He, however, said that it is challenging to deal with Russia President Vladimir Putin but expressed his belief that Putin would act in his own self-interest.

He outlined a plan to end the war on peaceful terms, which includes making significant concessions to Russia and freezing the current lines of control in a Korean war-style armistice agreement.

The Republican candidate’s approach diverges from the prevailing view among leading Republicans and Democrats, who emphasize the importance of preventing Russia’s success in Ukraine to maintain stability in Europe.

Ramaswamy’s proposal also comes with the understanding that Ukraine would be prohibited from joining NATO under his plan – a key demand Russia put forward before launching what it calls ‘special military operation’ in neighbouring Ukraine on February 24 last year.

As per his proposal, the Ukraine will have to cede its Donbas region which is currently under Russian control. It also includes lifting Western sanctions against the Kremlin. Additionally, Ramaswamy plans to withdraw all troops from Ukraine and close all bases in Eastern Europe.

Earlier, his Republican rival Trump said that he would focus on bringing the warring countries to the negotiation table rather than continuing the US policy of arming Ukraine with legal and advance weapons.
