Five personnel of the Indian Army have lost their lives and one was critically injured, in a terror attack near the Bhimber Gali area of Poonch today.

As per the Indian Army, an Army vehicle moving between Bhimber Gali and Poonch in the Rajouri sector in J&K was fired on today by unidentified terrorists. The incident took place on a highway in the Bhata Dhurian area, approximately 90 km from Poonch.

It is suspected that the vehicle caught fire due to the likely use of grenades by terrorists. The terrorists took advantage of heavy rains and low visibility while carrying out this attack.

Five personnel of the Rashtriya Rifles, deployed for counterterrorism operations, have unfortunately lost their lives in the incident. Another seriously injured soldier was evacuated immediately to the Army Hospital at Rajouri and is currently under treatment, the Army said.

The Army, along with Jammu and Kashmir police, have launched a search operation in the area to flush out the terrorists. Drones and search and rescue units of the army and police have been deployed in the area to carry out the search operation.

So far, there is no confirmation of the number of terrorists involved in this attack. It is also not clear whether this attack was carried out by the local terrorists hiding in the area or by a freshly infiltrated batch of terrorists from across the border.

Meanwhile, Army chief General Manoj Pande briefed Union Defence minister Rajnath Singh about the terror attack. The defence minister expressed his anguish at the deaths of soldiers in the terror attack.

Taking to microblogging site Twitter, Defence minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, “Anguished by the tragedy in Poonch district (J&K), where the Indian army has lost its brave soldiers after a truck caught fire. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families.”

Meanwhile, the Army has ordered a court of inquiry into the terror incident to ascertain further details behind the incident.
