Trump is the first serving or former US president to be indicted in a criminal case ever.
Former US president Donald Trump remained defiant after his politically-charged court arraignment on Tuesday as he doubled down on his claims of election fraud and politically-motivated prosecution, and vowed to keep fighting to restore America’s lost glory.
Trump – who has claimed that felony cases against him are meant to derail his 2024 presidential bid – told a group of his core supporters at his luxurious Mar-a-Lago club in Florida: “The only crime that I’ve committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it.”
“Our country is going to hell. The world is already laughing at us – for our open borders and the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan,” he lamented, adding, “they can’t beat us at the ballot box, so they try to beat us through the law.”
Trump, who is facing multiple investigations, tied his prosecution and the ongoing investigations to his false claims of a rigged election in 2020, saying, “We are a nation in decline, and now these radical left lunatics want to interfere in elections by using law enforcement. We can’t let that happen.”
He called on prosecutors in Atlanta to “drop” a case into his effort to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia, condemned an ongoing federal investigation into his handling of classified documents, and mocked a New York state investigation into his business.
Despite the legal troubles he is facing, Trump’s political fortunes seem to be rising, at least in Republican primary polls. Some legal experts say that the case puts him in far less jeopardy than allegations that he tried to overturn Georgia’s election results, incited an insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and illegally mishandled classified documents.
Trump ended his speech on an optimistic note, saying, “With all of this being said, and with a very dark cloud over our beloved country, I have no doubt nevertheless we will make America great again.”
Trump’s speech comes just hours after he was arraigned in a Manhattan courthouse on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records to keep the electorate in the dark about alleged previous affairs. Despite these charges, Trump maintained that he has done nothing “illegally,” and that the arraignment was “shocking to many” in that there were no surprises and no case.
Trump’s arraignment was a high-voltage drama in United States politics, and his speech afterwards was a reminder of the mass polarizing figure he remains in American public life. While his legal troubles are mounting, his base of support among Republicans seems to be growing.
