Union home minister Amit Shah’s scheduled visit to Bihar’s Sasaram has been canceled due prohibitory orders imposed in the town following violence during Ram Navami festival on Thursday.

Following clashes and vandalism, the administration imposed restrictions on public movement under Section 144 of CrPC and banned the Internet.

Shah was scheduled to address a rally in Nawada district on Sunday, which also has been postponed in keeping in mind the communal violence.

Informing reporters about the cancellation of the home minister’s visit, Bihar BJP president Samrat Choudhary blamed the Mahagathbandhan government led by chief minister Nitish Kumar for the lack of safety in the state and criticized the imposition of Section 144.

Shah was scheduled to arrive in Patna on Saturday evening and hold a rally in Nawada the next day. During his two-day visit, he was supposed to meet BJP officials in Patna and address a gathering of Kushwahas – the community from which the state BJP chief belongs to.

Three districts of Bihar – Rohtas, Nalanda, and Gaya reported spread in several pockets on Thursday and Friday. The state government has deployed heavy police force in the affected areas and suspended Internet services and clamped prohibitory orders in Bihar Sharif, Nalanda, and Sasaram.

At least 53 people have been arrested in all three districts for their alleged role in incidents of violence.

In Bihar Sharif of Nalanda, six people have been shot while nine others are injured in stone-pelting. The town has also reported incidents of loot in shops. Police have arrested 27 people in Bihar Sharif even as the situation remains tense.

Home minister Shah’s visit is considered crucial in view of upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The senior BJP leader visited Bihar four times in the last six months to garner support for the BJP.

Shah’s last visit to Bihar was on February 25 when he attended a public meeting on the occasion of Sahajanand Saraswati’s Jayanti in Valmiki Nagar before participating in the celebration and joining the farmer’s congregation in Patna. During his visit, he had targeted CM Nitish Kumar and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.
