A sharpshooter wanted by Uttar Pradesh police crossed into Bihar and surrendered at an anti-liquor border checkpost with two beer cans and two bottles of whiskey on Tuesday. Sources say that he made the dramatic move fearing action by Chief minister Yogi Adityanath who recently vowed in the state assembly that he would  erase the mafia from the state.

Angad Rai, 40, sharpshooter was promptly arrested under Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, produced before a judge on Wednesday and sent to jail.

Upon investigation it was found out that the man booked for violating Bihar’s prohibition law was a wanted criminal on the run.

“The arrested person was a history-sheeter with over 20 criminal cases registered against him,”  said Hriday Kant, SP Kaimur. He added, “He was out on bail in some cases, while absconding in others.”

A source informed that Rai got himself arrested in Bihar to ensure he wasn’t killed in an encounter in UP. It became apparent from the fact that Rai did not apply for bail after being arrested for carrying liquor, they added.

Angad Rai was found to be associated with gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari who’s currently lodged in UP’s Banda jail. Reportedly, there are more than 21 cases of murder, murder attempt, extortion, dacoity and loot registered against him, along with a ₹25,000 reward for his arrest.

Facing flak over the brazen killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 case of a BSP MLA’s murder, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on 25th February, accused the Samajwadi Party of nurturing mafias and vowed to destroy them. “The mafia whose name is emerging … is it not true that the Samajwadi Party had made him an MP… He was a mafia nurtured by the SP. Our government is working to break their back. ‘Mitti me mila denge’ (We will destroy the mafias),” Adityanath said in the Assembly.
