A meeting has been scheduled between Samajwadi party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on March 17.

As per the sources meeting between the two leaders will be held in Kolkata at Banerjee’s residence.

The Samajwadi Party will organise its two-day national executive in Kolkata from March 18 to discuss policies and strategies for assembly elections in several states this year, and the Lok Sabha polls in 2024. The Samajwadi Party’s national executive will be held in Kolkata after a hiatus of 11 years.

The meeting between Yadav and Banerjee is being termed a “courtesy visit”. However, sources tell us it will be a serious meeting to strategise on ways to corner the BJP on issues like misuse of central agencies, and the treatment of the BJP towards the Opposition in general.

The initiative for this meeting has been taken by the SP Chief, said a source.

Sources tell us that Trinamool Congress’s National General Secretary and Bengal Chief Minister’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee is also likely to be present in the meeting.

Yadav and Banerjee share a cordial relationship, having backed each other politically and electorally in the past.

In 2021, Akhilesh Yadav announced his complete support for TMC during West Bengal Assembly Elections. During the UP election, a year later in 2022, Banerjee campaigned for Yadav in Uttar Pradesh.

Even as the Opposition is struggling to stitch together a political front to counter the BJP, regional satraps continue to reach out to each other in order to explore alliance options in the run-up 2024. The meeting between Akhilesh and Mamata will be significant and will be closely watched out for the same reason.
