ROHTAK: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Punjab Police on Monday reached Sunaria Jail in Rohtak to question Dera Sacha Suda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in connection with a 2015 sacrilege case of Sri Guru Granth Sahib in Faridkot, Punjab.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been in Sunaria Jail in Rohtak after being convicted in 2017 for raping two of his disciples. Rahim was also named in the theft of a ‘bir’ (copy) of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book. Rahim has asked to speak in the presence of his lawyers.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Punjab Police is a four member team led by Chief IG Surinderpal Singh Parmar, consisting of SSP Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar, DSP Lakhbir Singh and an Inspector. The sacrilege case dates back to 2015. The SIT has come out with a list of questions to be asked to the Dera chief. However, SIT Chief SPS Parmar says that the questions will not be fixed. “A lot will also depend on what Ram Rahim tells us during questioning.”
Earlier, Faridkot Jail had issued orders to bring Ram Rahim on a production warrant. Ram Rahim was asked to appear on October 29. This was stayed by the Punjab Haryana High Court on October 28 itself. The High Court had directed the Punjab Police to conduct interrogation in jail.
The sacrilege case which the Punjab Police SIT wants to interrogate the Dera chief in, dates back to July 1, 2015, when the holy form of the Guru Granth Sahib was stolen from the Gurdwara of village Burj Jawahar Singh Wala, located 5 km from Bargadi in Faridkot district.
On September 24, 2015, two hand-written posters were found near the Gurudwara in Bargadi. In this case FIR number 63 was registered, In which Ram Rahim was accused. It is alleged that abusive language was used in these posters written in the Punjabi language and Dera Sacha Sauda’s part was also written in the theft of holy forms. On 12 October 2015, parts of the holy book were found scattered in the streets of Burj Jawahar Singhwala. Following this there was an incident of firing on Sikh Sangat, in which 2 people died.
